Klimata Lab

Methodology

Klimata Lab’s job is to be checkable. Every calculator publishes its full model, every rules page cites official sources, and every page shows when it was last updated. This page documents how.

AC size calculator

The AC size calculator estimates the required cooling capacity from room area, building type, sun exposure, floor position, room type and occupancy. The model is intentionally simple and fully published:

FactorValue
Base load100 W of cooling per m²
Reference ceiling height2.7 m (load scales linearly with actual ceiling height)
Sun exposure×0.9 shaded · ×1.0 average · ×1.15 sunny/south side
Top floor×1.1
Insulation×0.9 good · ×1.0 average · ×1.15 poor
Occupancy+100 W per person above two
Kitchen+300 W

The result is shown as a ±10% range and mapped to the nearest standard unit class (2.0 / 2.5 / 3.5 / 5.0 / 7.0 kW; above 7 kW we recommend a multi-split assessment instead of a single unit).

Building-series defaults. When you pick a Latvian building type (602 series, 119 series, hrushchevka, pre-war…), the calculator applies that series’ typical ceiling height and insulation level as defaults, plus series-specific warnings (old aluminium wiring in hrushchevkas, tile-facade drilling in 602-series buildings, heritage approval in the pre-war centre). These defaults come from our building-series research and are listed per series on the building pages.

Limitations. This is a screening estimate, not a thermal load calculation (LVS EN 12831 or a cooling-load equivalent). Large glazing, unusual layouts, poor airtightness or server/appliance heat can move the real number. A serious installer confirms sizing on site — treat a quote based on no questions at all as a red flag.

Content

  • Pages are drafted with AI assistance and then pass a human local-verification check — facts, prices, rules and official links — before publication. The build itself rejects any guide, rules or price page that lacks a direct answer, sources, or an updated date.
  • Rules pages cite official sources (likumi.lv, Riga municipality, Altum, institution websites) and carry a “last verified” date. When rules change, the page is updated, not silently left stale.
  • Price information is presented as ranges with the assumptions stated, never as a promise of what any specific contractor will charge.
